In 1477 Mary of Burgundy received a diamond engagement ring from the Archduke Maximillian of Hamburg. This event marks the first time in recorded history that a diamond was given as a betrothal or engagement ring. The tradition of a betrothal ring, however, dates back to the ancient Romans or possibly even further back in time to pre-history.
